Total income for the second quarter easily surpassed last year and was also 2.5% higher than the €313.3 million recorded in the first quarter, according to data released by the Spanish regulator, the Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ).

Casinos generated the highest total gambling income (GGR) in the second quarter, at €149.9 million, up 27.9% annually and 4.5% higher than the first quarter.

Slot machine income increased by 29.9% annually, while live roulette GGR rose by 8.9%.

Spain’s sports wagering income skyrocketed in the second quarter
The sports wagering segment recorded the largest percentage increase in the quarter. GGR reached €133.3 million in the three months, up 118.9% annually.

Pre-match sports wagering GGR was up 1.8% from the second quarter, while live wagering GGR also increased by 3.5%. Horse racing wagering increased by 22.7%, but other sports wagering GGR fell by 15.1%.

Furthermore, poker GGR was up 27.6% annually, reaching €25.8 million, but this figure was 5.8% lower than the first quarter. Tournament poker GGR increased by 38.1% from the second quarter of 2022, while cash poker GGR also rose slightly by 4.9%.

During the second trimester of 2023, the Spanish gaming industry experienced a 5% growth.

In total, the revenue generated from gaming activities reached 140,000 euros, marking a substantial 1464.9% rise compared to the previous year, but a decline of 41.5% compared to the second quarter of the preceding year.

Player deposits saw a significant increase of nearly 20%.
The DGOJ reported that player deposits rose by 19.6% compared to the same period in the previous year, but decreased by 2.0% compared to the first quarter. Withdrawals experienced a 3.0% increase compared to 2022, but a 2.3% decline compared to the first quarter.

Total marketing expenditures by Spanish licensed operators reached 96.6 million euros, indicating a 3.0% year-on-year increase. Advertising spending rose by 7.7% compared to the previous year, affiliate spending increased by 56.2%, sponsorship saw a substantial 225.2% increase, although promotional activities experienced a slight 1.7% decrease.

The average number of monthly active gaming accounts increased by 11.4% compared to the previous year, reaching 1,134,993. However, the average number of new accounts per month decreased by 3.0% to 102,804 users.

Furthermore, the DGOJ released an updated overview of the number of active licensed operators within the Spanish market. During the second quarter, there were approximately 78 licensed operators offering various forms of gambling.

Of these licensed operators, 43 offer sports betting, 50 offer casino games, 9 offer poker, 3 offer bingo, and 2 offer competitions.
